Vision
"A world where every seafood consumer enjoys safe, sustainable, and ethically sourced affordable seafood, contributing to healthy lives and thriving waterways and oceans."
Mission
"To advocate for the rights and interests of seafood consumers globally by promoting access to quality, sustainably harvested affordable seafood, fostering transparency and ethical practices within the seafood industry, and educating the public on the benefits and importance of sustainable seafood consumption.."
OUR WORK
"SCA was established for the principal purpose of promoting, advancing, empowering and representing the interests of consumers of seafood."
SCA will seek to achieve this through:
- Promoting consumer access to quality, sustainably harvested, healthy and affordable seafood;
- Fostering transparency and ethical practices within the seafood industry;
- Promoting sustainable seafood practices that protect marine ecosystems and support fish populations, and engaging with stakeholders to encourage such practices;
- Educating the public on the benefits and importance of sustainable seafood consumption;
- Supporting and promoting initiatives that address food security and nutrition through the promotion of seafood consumption;
- Undertaking, supporting and disseminating reliable and accurate research on seafood-related issues to seafood consumers and other stakeholders;
- Developing a strong, coordinated voice for seafood consumers and representing and advocating on behalf of seafood consumers to government, regulators and the seafood industry; and
- Doing all other lawful things as are incidental or conducive to the attainment of the Objects of the Constitution.
ARE WE AN INDUSTRY BODY OR A CONSUMER ORGANISATION?
The Seafood Consumers Association is an independent consumer organisation focused exclusively on seafood.
- Our board is small, governance-oriented and independent. Members bring technical expertise in food and seafood, but do not represent industry bodies or commercial brands.
- Our Constitution prevents commercial entities from controlling our decisions or influencing our policy positions.
- We have an Advisory Council (AC) covering all aspects of relevant seafood knowledge. The AC is encouraged to raise seafood consumer issues with our Administration team through regular meetings.
- Our funding comes from public and philanthropic sources. Our accounts are reported through the ACNC and published annually in our Annual Report.
- We are brand-agnostic: we do not promote companies or products. We promote consumers’ rights to safe, honestly described and affordable seafood.
- Our work is grounded in global evidence, including FAO Technical Papers and related research, which demonstrate that seafood is the most complex and fraud-prone traded food category. We exist to close that gap for consumers.
We welcome scrutiny from consumer peak bodies and regulators, and we are committed to continuously strengthening our governance so that our structure reflects our mission: putting seafood consumers at the centre of decisions about seafood policy, trade and regulation.
